Email marketing tips for Etsy? Is that necessary? Read on to learn why shops without an email marketing plan are losing potential customers and leaving money on the table, plus what you can do to change that!
If you have been selling (or trying to sell) on Etsy you know that half of the battle is getting potential customers to land on your shop page. There is a growing number of shops and listings being added daily, which decreases the chances of someone finding us, and making sales.
Before you get discouraged and spend money on ads, or a course, or hire a marketing expert to help you, let’s try to make some conversions using the people who are already visiting your shop.
Email Marketing Tips for Etsy
When was the last time you looked at your Etsy statistics? You can find them under “Stats” in your seller profile. Look for the chart that says “visits.”
If that number is higher than the number of sales you made during that same time period, you have the potential to make a lot more money.
As the name indicates, the number of visits shows you how many people have found your listing or shop, either through Etsy search results, or elsewhere, and have landed on your page.
This is huge.
Getting people to visit your page is the most challenging step. Once they are there, you need to give them a reason to stick around. They may not see something they want to buy today or tomorrow, but they didn’t land in your shop accidentally. They saw something that they liked.
Don’t ignore your searchers
One of the biggest mistakes we can make as Etsy sellers or any type of seller is to write someone off because they don’t make an immediate purchase. We’ve all bought something before. Sometimes it takes a little bit of time to make a decision. We like to ponder, compare and weigh our options.
This is our opportunity to tip the scales in our favor. Give your shop visitors something to remind them that they’ll want to return to your store. “But Michelle, what can I give them? We’re a virtual shop, remember.”
Behold the power of the email opt-in.
What do you sell? How does it improve your customers’ lives, and how does it bring them joy? Dig deep into how you are serving, and then develop a free, helpful piece of content that aligns with the items you sell in your shop.
Here are some examples:
If you sell wedding invitations: a free printable seating chart planner
If you sell handmade jewelry: a free guide to styling your outfits for fall
If you sell mugs: a buy 3 get one free coupon + a list of coffee recipes you can try at home
Don’t be afraid that you’re giving away too much and that your shop visitors will just take your freebie and run. Wow them with value. Show them you care. Give them a taste of what they would get by purchasing something from you.

How to deliver your free email opt-in?
Sign up for an email service provider like ConvertKit (who I use). Both services offer guides and instructions for getting set up. If you can follow a recipe, you can set this up! If you need help, you can access my free email mini-course here.
Please don’t feel overwhelmed and abandon this idea once you reach this step. Yes, it will take you a few hours to get set up, but it will be worth your time. Once you have it in place, your hard work is done, and you’ll only need to make occasional tweaks in the future.
But what about Etsy’s rules?
Etsy Seller Policies are updated frequently, and you can always find the latest here. If you are sharing a free printable as your email opt-in, make sure that it isn’t an item you sell in your shop. The company’s main concern is that you aren’t trying to sell the same products that you sell on Etsy, somewhere else.
Where to place your free email opt-in?
As many places as you can! Here are some suggestions:
- Your About page
- On your Around the Web section
- In your listings
- On social media
- Create a pin on Pinterest that links directly to your opt-in page
What to do once you have new subscribers?
Stay in touch with your new email subscribers. Find more ways to provide them with tips, specials, kindly-worded emails, and news about new products or special offerings.
Keep your customer at the center of your messages. Ask about them, what’s going on in their lives and how you can help them. By genuinely caring about the people who gave you a second of their attention, you will be creating much more than a sale— you’ll be creating a lifelong fan, who will keep you in mind next time they are looking to purchase something.
A bonus email marketing benefit
Of all the email marketing tips for Etsy shared in this post, it’s all leading to the most inexpensive and most effective form of advertising: word of mouth. No Facebook ad will ever trump the impact of one friend saying to another, “hey, you need to check out this shop.”
Do not miss out on your opportunity to connect with the people who land on your shop page. Give them a reason to stay connected. Give them a reason to keep coming back.
