New York, my home city, will always hold a special place in my heart, especially in the fall. For one, it’s a beautiful season to be there. The air is crisp, everyone is dressed in cute outfits, and you can find apple cider donuts on every corner (you just got a little glimpse of NY through my eyes). The bigger reason for me, is that it’s where my hubby and I first met — right at the beginning of fall— and where we have many sweet NYC memories from our first months dating.
As you may have already gathered from my Spring and Summer displays— I like to do something a little bit unexpected when it comes to seasonal decorating. The initial criteria I set for myself was to come up with an idea that didn’t involve pumpkins. Once I thought of NYC as a potential theme, I came up with so many reasons why it would be significant— and knew that I had a winner.
In addition to fall being the season that James and I met, it’s also the season when we got married, so it could double as a little anniversary display. One of my favorite movies is “You’ve Got Mail”, and anyone who is a fan, will recall the famous line “Don’t you just love New York in Fall?”. Lastly, I thought that this display would be a lovely way to honor my dear city as we remember 9/11.
The centerpiece of the display is a piece of artwork I created, using a quote from F.Scott Fitzgerald. You can find a link to download the art at the end of the post (for free, of course)!
I’ve taken up quite an expensive hobby lately, called “antiquing”. It’s at my new favorite local antique shop where I picked up this awesome camera (circa 1946) and a stack of vintage books. The pencils, as you may have guessed, is my little call out to “You’ve Got Mail”. Tom Hanks tells Meg Ryan that New York in the fall makes him want to buy pencils— and that if he knew her name and address, he’d send her a bouquet of them. {heart melts}
This little old (1917 old) typewriter was a birthday gift from my hubby, and I am obsessed with it. It doesn’t really have anything to do with NYC and it’s probably going to find it’s way into a future seasonal display…note to Santa, perhaps? Hmmm…
I would be remiss if I didn’t include a photo of us, if I’m deeming this an anniversary display.
This awesome shot was taken by our wedding photographer, Gary (shoutout Christine Studios) during our engagement photo session— right in NYC where it all started.
And there you have it! A fall-ish display for two crazy kids who managed to find each other in a city of over 8 million people.
